About SSC Stenographer

The Stenographer Grade 'C' and 'D' Examination recruits stenographers for ministries, departments and organisations of the Government of India, their attached and subordinate offices and statutory bodies. Grade 'C' is a Group 'B' non-gazetted post and Grade 'D' a Group 'C' post. Only candidates who already have stenography skills should apply.

Candidates need to have passed Class 12 or equivalent by 1 August 2026. The age limit on that date is 18 to 30 years for Grade 'C' and 18 to 27 years for Grade 'D', with the usual relaxations. A candidate can apply for either grade or both.

The first stage is a computer-based test of 200 multiple-choice questions in 2 hours: General Intelligence and Reasoning (50 questions, 50 marks), General Awareness (50, 50) and English Language and Comprehension (100, 100). The 2026 notice gives a sectional timer of 30, 30 and 60 minutes. Each wrong answer loses 0.25 marks. Questions are set in English and Hindi; the English part is in English.

The minimum qualifying marks in the computer-based test are 30% for UR, 25% for OBC/EWS and 20% for other categories. Marks from different shifts are normalised. Candidates are then shortlisted category-wise for the skill test.

The skill test is one dictation of 10 minutes in English or Hindi, as chosen in the application form: 100 words per minute for Grade 'C' and 80 words per minute for Grade 'D'. It is transcribed on a computer in 40 minutes (English) or 55 minutes (Hindi) for Grade 'C', and 50 or 65 minutes for Grade 'D'. The skill test is qualifying only; selection is by merit in the computer-based test among those who qualify it.
