About SSC MTS

The Staff Selection Commission holds this examination to recruit Multi-Tasking (Non-Technical) Staff for central government ministries, departments and offices, and Havaldars for the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) and the Central Bureau of Narcotics (CBN). Both are Pay Level-1, Group 'C' non-gazetted posts, and the minimum qualification is Matriculation (10th) or equivalent.

The written stage is one Computer Based Examination taken on one day in two compulsory sessions. Session I (45 minutes) has 20 questions of Numerical and Mathematical Ability and 20 of Reasoning Ability and Problem Solving, with no negative marking. Session II follows immediately (45 minutes): 25 questions of General Awareness and 25 of English Language and Comprehension, with one mark taken away for each wrong answer. Every question carries 3 marks.

Session I is evaluated first and is qualifying: only candidates who reach the minimum marks in it have Session II evaluated. Merit, cut-offs and the final selection are based on the normalised marks of Session II alone.

The paper is set in English, Hindi and 13 regional languages; the English Language and Comprehension part is in English only.

For the post of Havaldar there is a further stage after the written exam: a Physical Efficiency Test (walking 1,600 metres in 15 minutes for men, 1 km in 20 minutes for women) and a Physical Standard Test of height and chest or weight, held by CBIC and CBN for candidates shortlisted on their Session II marks. It is qualifying and is not part of these practice tests.
