About SSC JHT
The Combined Hindi Translators Examination fills Group B non-gazetted translator posts in central government ministries and departments: Junior Translation Officer in the Central Secretariat Official Language Service and Armed Forces Headquarters, Junior Hindi Translator, Junior Translator and Junior Translation Officer (pay Level 6), and Senior Hindi Translator, Senior Translator and Senior Translation Officer (pay Level 7).
Candidates need a master's degree with Hindi and English at degree level (as subjects or as the medium), and either a recognised diploma or certificate in Hindi–English translation or experience of such translation in a central or state government office (two years for the junior posts, three for the senior). The age limit in the 2026 notice is 18 to 30 years on 1 August 2026, with the usual relaxations.
Paper I is a computer-based objective test of 200 questions: 100 in General Hindi and 100 in General English, one mark each, with 0.25 taken away for a wrong answer. It lasts two hours, with a sectional timer of one hour for each part. It tests the languages and their literature, correct use of words, phrases and idioms, and correct, precise writing, at degree level.
Candidates are shortlisted on Paper I marks for Paper II, a two-hour descriptive paper of 200 marks: one passage to translate from Hindi into English, one from English into Hindi, and an essay in each language. Final merit counts Paper I at 50% weight and Paper II in full.
