About SSC JE

The SSC Junior Engineer Examination recruits Junior Engineers (Group B, Level 6) for offices of the Government of India such as the CPWD, MES, Border Roads Organisation, Central Water Commission and others. Candidates sit the engineering part of their own stream: Civil and Structural, Electrical, or Mechanical. The 2026 notice also brings in Junior Engineer (Telecom) and Scientific Assistant posts in the IMD, with papers of their own.

There are two computer-based papers, both objective multiple-choice and both set in Hindi and English. Paper I has 200 questions in 2 hours on one clock: 50 on General Intelligence and Reasoning, 50 on General Awareness and 100 on the candidate's engineering branch, 1 mark each with 0.25 taken off for a wrong answer.

Paper II has 100 questions on the engineering branch in 2 hours, for 300 marks, with 1 mark taken off for a wrong answer. Engineering questions are set at about diploma level.

Under the 2026 notice Paper I is qualifying: its normalised marks decide who is shortlisted for Paper II, and final merit is drawn from Paper II alone. The minimum qualifying marks are 30% for UR, 25% for OBC and EWS, and 20% for other categories. An IS 456:2000 table, steam tables and a scientific calculator are given on screen.
