SSC CPO preparation plan for beginners: where to start and a 12-week schedule

If you are starting SSC CPO preparation from zero, the amount to cover can look large: four subjects in Paper I, physical standards and endurance events, then Paper II. This plan breaks it into a 12-week schedule that a beginner can follow, using the 2026 pattern. If your Paper I is the one on 23 to 28 November 2026, jump to the last 30 days plan instead; this one suits a beginner aiming at the next cycle, or anyone with three months in hand.
Step 1: check that SSC CPO is for you
- Posts: Sub-Inspector (Executive) in Delhi Police, Sub-Inspector (GD) in BSF, CISF, CRPF, ITBP and SSB, and, from 2026, Sub-Inspector (Fire) in CISF. All are Pay Level 6.
- Education: a bachelor's degree (for SI Fire, a science degree with physics, chemistry and maths, or an engineering diploma, as the 2026 notice sets out).
- Age (2026 notice): 20 to 25 years on 1 August 2026, with relaxations for reserved categories; 18 to 30 for SI (Fire).
- Physical standards: for most men 170 cm height and 80/85 cm chest; for most women 157 cm. See the PET and PST guide.
- Delhi Police (men): a valid driving licence for motorcycle and car (LMV) by the date of the physical test.
The full facts are in the SSC CPO exam guide.
Step 2: understand the stages
- Paper I: 100 questions in 1 hour, four parts of 25 with a 15-minute timer each, +1 / −0.25. It shortlists for the physical tests.
- PST and PET: height, chest and weight, then running, jumps and (for men) shot put. Qualifying only.
- Paper II: Reasoning, GA and Quant (20 questions each, 2 marks each) in one hour, and English (100 questions, 200 marks) in another. A wrong answer costs 0.50. Final merit is on Paper II.
- Detailed Medical Examination.
Step 3: a 12-week schedule
| Weeks | Quant | Reasoning | English | General Awareness | Fitness |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 to 2 | Number system, simplification, percentage | Analogy, classification, series | Basic grammar: tenses, agreement | Polity basics | Walk-run 3 times a week |
| 3 to 4 | Profit and loss, ratio, averages | Coding-decoding, ranking | Vocabulary: 15 words a day | History: freedom movement | Easy 2 to 3 km runs |
| 5 to 6 | Interest, time and work | Blood relations, directions | Prepositions, articles, error spotting | Geography | Add strides and jumps |
| 7 to 8 | Time and distance, algebra | Syllogism, puzzles | Cloze and comprehension | Economy, science | Timed 1.6 km or 800 m |
| 9 to 10 | Geometry, mensuration, trigonometry | Non-verbal, mixed sets | Idioms, one-word substitution | Static GK, current affairs | Interval runs |
| 11 to 12 | Revision and mixed sets | Mixed sets under time | Full English parts | Revision from notes | Full PET trials |
Daily time: about four hours on study days: one hour each for two subjects, one hour of practice questions, and 30 minutes each of GK and vocabulary.
Step 4: bring in mock tests early
Beginners often wait until they "finish the syllabus" before sitting a mock. Do not wait.
- Week 4: sit your first full SSC CPO Paper I mock, only to see the format and the 15-minute timers.
- Weeks 5 to 10: one full mock a week, analysed the same day, plus topic practice from the practice set.
- Weeks 11 and 12: two or three mocks a week.
Our 15 free SSC CPO mock tests are in the 2026 pattern, in English and Hindi, and get harder from test 1 to test 15. See how to analyse an SSC CPO mock test.
Mistakes beginners make
- Collecting many books and finishing none. One standard book per subject is enough.
- Ignoring English because it seems hard. It is 200 of the 320 marks in Paper II.
- Leaving fitness until after Paper I. The physical test can come within weeks of the result.
- Guessing blindly in mocks. See SSC CPO negative marking.
Frequently asked questions
Can a beginner clear SSC CPO in 3 months?
A beginner who studies steadily for about four hours a day and trains three or four times a week can be ready for Paper I in three months. Paper II and the physical test need further work after that.
Which subject should a beginner start with?
Start with Quant and English, which take longest to build, and add 30 minutes of General Awareness every day from the first week.
Is coaching necessary for SSC CPO?
No. Many candidates prepare on their own with standard books and mock tests. See SSC CPO self-study vs coaching.
