How to improve accuracy in SSC CPO mock tests: fewer wrong answers, more marks

In SSC CPO Paper I a wrong answer costs 0.25 marks, and a careless mistake on a question you knew costs 1.25: the mark you should have earned plus the penalty. That makes accuracy (right answers ÷ attempted questions) one of the fastest ways to raise your score in the last weeks before Paper I on 23 to 28 November 2026 (proposed). This guide shows how to measure it and how to raise it.
Measure it first
After each mock, write two numbers for each part:
- Accuracy = right ÷ attempted × 100
- Wrong answers
| Accuracy | What it means |
|---|---|
| Above 90% | Very good: you can afford to attempt a few more |
| 80% to 90% | Good: work on the type of mistake you make most |
| Below 80% | Too many wrong answers: slow down the first pass and guess less |
Example: 70 attempted and 56 right is 80% accuracy and 14 wrong answers, a penalty of 3.5 marks. Cutting wrong answers to 7 with the same number right adds 1.75 marks, and usually the right answers rise too.
Find where your wrong answers come from
Label every wrong answer in a mock:
- Concept: you did not know the rule or fact.
- Careless: you misread, miscalculated or clicked the wrong option.
- Rushed: you answered in the last seconds of a part.
- Guess: you could not rule out two options.
Each label has its own fix, below. Most candidates find that careless and rushed errors are half of their wrong answers.
Fixes that work
For careless errors
- Read the last line of the question twice ("NOT", "except", "the least").
- In Quant, write the base of every percentage and convert units before calculating.
- In error spotting, find the real subject of the verb before choosing.
For rushed errors
- Use a two-pass method in every part: quick questions first, marked questions second, and stop answering new questions in the last minute.
- Practise single parts (25 questions, 15 minutes) so the timer stops feeling like a threat.
For guesses
- Guess only when two options are ruled out. A blind guess is worth about 0.06 marks on average; a 50-50 guess about 0.38. See SSC CPO negative marking.
For concept gaps
- These are not accuracy problems but knowledge problems. Add the topic to your repair list and use the topic-wise practice set.
Checks that take two seconds
| Part | Check before you click |
|---|---|
| Reasoning | Did I draw the directions or family tree? Did I count letter positions from A = 1? |
| General Awareness | Am I choosing between two options with a reason, or four without one? |
| Quant | Is my answer roughly the size I expected? Are the units right? |
| English | Does the verb match its subject? Is the preposition the one this word takes? |
A 2-week accuracy drill
- Days 1 to 7: one 25-question part a day under a 15-minute timer. Goal: no more than 2 wrong answers in the part, even if you attempt fewer.
- Days 8 to 14: full mocks every other day. Goal: no more than 10 wrong answers in 100.
Then raise the number of questions you attempt while keeping the wrong answers down. Our 15 SSC CPO mock tests show right, wrong and unattempted for each part after you submit, so you can track both numbers.
Accuracy and speed together
Accuracy and speed rise together when you practise the right way: the patterns you recognise quickly are also the ones you get right. For speed, see how to improve speed in SSC CPO Paper I.
Frequently asked questions
What is good accuracy in SSC CPO mocks?
Above 85% is good for most candidates, with fewer than 10 to 12 wrong answers in a 100-question mock.
Should I attempt fewer questions to raise accuracy?
For a week or two, yes, while you fix careless and rushed errors. Then attempt more again, keeping your wrong answers low.
Why do I get easy questions wrong in mocks?
Usually from reading too fast or answering in the last seconds of a part. A two-pass method and reading the last line twice fix most of these.
