SSC CPO exam-day strategy: time management for the four 15-minute parts

On exam day the 2026 SSC CPO Paper I gives you one hour, split into four parts of 15 minutes each: Reasoning, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude and English, 25 questions in each. Time left in one part cannot be carried into the next. This changes how you should manage time compared with the old paper, where one clock ran for two hours. Here is a plan for the day itself, from leaving home to the last minute of English. Paper I is proposed for 23 to 28 November 2026; your own date and shift are on your admit card.
Before the exam
- Report on time. The admit card gives the reporting time. SSC's notice says candidates who have not completed Aadhaar-based authentication must report two hours before the exam.
- Carry the printed admit card, an original photo ID with the same date of birth as the admit card, two recent passport-size colour photographs, and any other document the admit card names. See the SSC CPO final exam checklist.
- Leave behind your phone, smartwatch, earphones and any electronic device. SSC's notice treats possession of a mobile phone or similar device in the hall as misconduct that can lead to debarment for 3 to 5 years.
- Eat a normal meal and drink water. Do not revise new material in the queue; read your one-page notes if anything.
The 15-minute plan for every part
The same rhythm works in all four parts:
| Minutes | What to do |
|---|---|
| 0 to 9 | First pass. Answer every question you can do in under 30 seconds. Mark the rest for review. |
| 9 to 14 | Second pass. Return to marked questions you know how to solve. |
| 14 to 15 | Stop and check. Make sure every answer you meant to give is actually saved. Guess only where you have ruled out two options. |
Twenty-five questions in 15 minutes is 36 seconds a question on average. If a question has no clear method after 20 seconds, mark it and move on.
Part by part
Part I: Reasoning
Start with the quick types: analogy, classification, series, ranking, sign operations. Leave long arrangements and multi-clue puzzles for the second pass. Draw directions and family trees on the rough sheet.
Part II: General Awareness
The fastest part: you either know the answer or you do not. Do not spend more than 20 seconds on any question. Leave questions where you cannot rule out two options; a blind guess is worth about 0.06 marks and adds risk (see SSC CPO negative marking).
Part III: Quantitative Aptitude
Answer simplification, percentage, averages and direct-formula questions first. Long data or geometry questions come second. Estimate before calculating: options are often far apart.
Part IV: English Comprehension
Do vocabulary, spelling, idioms and one-word substitutions first (about 3 minutes), then error spotting and fill in the blanks, and finish with the cloze and the reading passage. Read the passage questions before the passage.
When you get stuck
- One hard question is worth one mark, the same as the easiest. Never let it cost you three easy ones.
- If a part goes badly, let it go. The next part starts with a full 15 minutes. Take one slow breath and start fresh.
- Do not change answers without a reason. First answers you chose with a clear method are usually right.
Rehearse it before the day
Sit at least two full mocks with the four timers at the time of your shift. Our SSC CPO mock tests run exactly this way. For faster parts, see how to improve speed in SSC CPO Paper I, and for the split of your study time, see SSC CPO Paper I subject-wise time allocation.
Frequently asked questions
Can I go back to a previous part in SSC CPO Paper I?
The 2026 notice gives each part a sectional timer of 15 minutes. Plan as if each part closes when its time ends, and finish your review inside it.
How much time should I give each question in SSC CPO?
About 36 seconds on average. Aim for 20 seconds on General Awareness and vocabulary, which leaves more time for Quant and puzzles.
What is the reporting time for SSC CPO?
It is printed on your admit card. Candidates who have not completed Aadhaar-based authentication must report two hours before the start of the exam.
